Sony SCD-XA5400ES CD Player, used but excellent condition. US version 120 V/60Hz

Even better than its fine reputation
The Sony SCD-XA54000ES SACD/Redbox CD player is one fine piece of audio gear. Build quality, aesthetics, intuitive operation, and remote are first rate. Sound quality is top-of-the-class for an affordable digital music source, especially on SACD. It actually defies relative classification, IMO. Redbook CD playback is very good as well, in fact much better than I expected from the reviews that I read. This is compared to my beloved Ayre CX-7eMP player which is highly regarded and cost well over twice as much. Both have their individual Redbook strengths, yet they sound different. Comparison boils down to a matter of personal preference, a big affirmation of the audio quality of this Sony. The Sony is more dynamic sounding and has superior bass power. The Ayre is more refined sounding with better three-dimensional image recreation and a better overall tonal balance. I could easily live with either on Redbook, but the Sony's superb sound on SACD has me hooked. The Sony does take a long while to settle in. Responds favorably to upgrades in power cords, interconnects, vibration platforms/footers, and even boutique fuses. Next step for me is a ModWright 5400ES tube-modded version of this player. I look forward to hearing the sonic enhancements that the ModWright's extensive improvements to the stock unit's power supply, output stage, clock, and chassis dampening impart to this sonic gem's already excellent sound quality.
