I am an autoharp luthier, a fan of extinct mechanical instruments in the zither family, and I also love vintage keyboards, synths, and washing machine parts.

    Vintage Oscar Schmidt Autoharp
    05 Apr, 2016
it's not an autoharp, and it doesn't work, but I like it in a sort of "Dodge Veg-e-matic" sort of way.
I bought this thinking it was a classic autoharp! It turns out this is a "Mandolin Zither," a device from a time when all sorts of strange and wonderful designs were coming out to make a zither (basically a harp with a resonator) easier to play and more full of a range of sound options. Unlike an autoharp, which I know how to play and which creates chords by muting strings, this puppy was designed to pluck strings when you pushed one of those buttons. Sounds kind of cool! However, when this arrived (and they really shipped this quickly, in sturdy and secure packaging) I learned that the mechanism did not work, and that to get it working would cost several times more than the instrument itself cost me! That said, it has all its strings, and it's a beautiful antique. Some day I'm going to figure out how to fix it myself!

    this tunes autoharps rill good!
I do declare... this is the smallest and bestest autoharp tuner I've used in a dog's age! It fits in my pocket, and it tunes not only harps, but also hearts! This tuning hammer is a grand slammer!

sounds great acoustic or plugged in!
This autoharp sounds amazing. Unlike older autoharps of this type, you don't have to break your hand depressing the chord bars, and the button doesn't nearly disappear beneath the plastic when you push down. It sounds pretty but not precious, and it is really good plugged in, too.
