Most Wanted Recitals!: Cristina Deutekom In Vienna, Deutekom/Allers/Wiener Volks

Light or dark, a different vocal character for each role
To my way of thinking, she was the last great soprano. In spite of her unorthodox passage work, her range, power, expressive qualities and deference to the written wishes of the composer all showed her to be in direct line to the best of the past before her.

Well-written, as usual with the Brits!
Not much to add to the above - most who enjoy this series as much as I will be as unhappy about the small number of episodes.
Are we Yanks really not fans? How come it's not available in "Region 0 or 1". And why has it been apparently dropped from the SoCal showings? Booooo!

Not a crooner, but...
This is a fascinating disc, giving us a glimpse into the lightest side of a singer who is remembered more for his Mozart and Operetta successes than these lighter pieces, only a few of which seem to belong to his normal area of popularity. I have not, as yet, finished listening to the disc, but am very pleased with all but one of the pieces. I have a particular fondness for the Toselli Serenade, here sung in English. All of the singers I have in my collection take this gem, so very popular in its day, at a slower pace and sing with a great deal more of the emotional qualities we associate with Serenades. This is sung in a very off-hand manner, leaving the listener with a 'so what' estimate of the piece. I would not for a moment suggest that this should keep you from buying this disc - I really love the rest, including his charming English, which is much easier to understand than might be expected.
