I can handle this!
Two of Sharon's classics from two classic albums are given the full 12" makeover.
"Can you handle it?" (master mix).
This is the version first appearing on "Kiss Fm Mastermixes" double album back in 1982 (ish). I was much younger then, and recall not being too impressed with this one. To be honest, the poor UK pressing did not help, but I remember thinking too much talk and not enough song. It sounds a hell of a lot better on cd though. Basically, it's seven minutes long, and Shaz keeps on saying "you know, you know, you know" and "I can talk too, I can talk too". If you've heard it before, you'll know what I mean. Either it's absolutely sublime, or I'm getting old! Probably a bit of both!
"Can you handle it?"
The mix is not listed, other than the playing time of 6.24. I reckon this is the full album version from her eponymous debut for Prelude Records. If you're a fan, you'll already have it. If you don't, the track sparkles right from the opening duel of horns with bassline, through the Benson type guitar riffs at four minutes into Sharon's vocal finale into fade.
"In the name of love" (disconet remix)
I recently bought and reviewed the album "Redd Hot", lamenting on the lack of a remix of this track. This was why I actually bought this single. I'd not heard it before, and was quite impressed. Disconet seem to have added some strings amongst the usual swirly effects. They must've had a decent budget as the strings sound sympathetic to the original feel. I'm not sure about the "sax" around the five minute mark. It sounds a bit synthetic to my ears. Other than that, I can't really fault it. Still think it could've been added to the "Redd Hot" cd though
"In the name of love" (hot trax mix)
To be honest, I'd heard this before and knew what to expect. This is quite a subtle mix, remaining pretty true to the original. No real aural pyrotechnics as such. The bass sounds a bit beefier and there's a bit of phasing at the four minute bridge. Hot trax made it for the floor, steering clear of the gimmicks. They did a top notch job of it.
There's nothing bad I can say about this cd. It's called "12 inch classics on cd". 'Nuff said
