Just Brilliant
The stories are based in 1930's Tilling so the language and settings are time appropriate. They tell the story of the competitiveness between the two protagonists - Mapp and Lucia. The competition comes from garden parties, bridge parties and who serves the best lobster - so all very gentle but highly amusing. E F Benson has captured the characters brilliantly and you can't help but be a little in love with Lucia whilst feeling ever so slightly sorry for Mapp. All the other characters are equally as spellbinding as the main two - Georgie and Diva who play hapless sidekicks to Mapp and Lucia - Diva, the artist who is very forward thinking. Major Benjy the heavy drinking macho male of the piece and the multi accented Padre. There are a plethora of minor characters but they are all so well observed and introduced that you get to know them all really well. A joyous collection of books. I first read them 30 years ago and I periodically go back to re-read them as they are timeless and still as funny today as they were on first reading. And great value.
