Hornby TTS A4 Class Sound Decoder - Total Disappointment
My first attempt at converting a Bachmann split-chassis to use a sound decoder, having successfully completed 50+ "non-sound" locomotives of this type. The cutting and wiring went like clockwork and I chose to extend the audio cabling from the speaker end as per the instructions. I also inserted a miniature plug between the engine and tender to allow them to be separated if necessary. The initial programming on my Hornby RailMaster was equally straightforward with the sounds mapping easily to the Function keys. That's where the good news ended... Switched to DCC Track feed and, as I opened the throttle, the loco juddered like a bicycle heading downhill on a 1 in 10 cobbled street until it eventually smoothed-out at about 50 percent of the speed range, although at the top-end, scale speed was well below the 120mph I'd expect for an A4. The "chuffing" sound was, however, perfectly in sync with the progression - well for about a minute when it, then, inexplicably stopped. Didn't lose throttle control mind, just the sound, that's to say all the sounds that I'd set-up. The only way I could get sound to restart was by isolating the engine from the track and reconnecting. Again, intense juddering with sound cutting-off after about a minute. Tried it several times and every time the same result. Rebooted everything too, still no difference. As per the instructions, I changed the CV150 setting which considerably reduced the low speed juddering and put the scale speed where I'd expected it to be, however, the sound still cut-out after a short time at the top end speed. When I went on-line I found numerous threads about Hornby TTS Decoders indicating the love-hate relationship that many, admittedly all-Hornby, collectors have experienced. For me, this decoder was just a total disappointment.
