Very Good - an Education and insight into the 20th Century
An excellent historical review of the Jazz idiom in the 20th Century. The films also depict how Jazz Music evolved in response to the economic, social changes of the era with particular emphasis on taking each stage of the musical evolution of Jazz and how it reflected the respective decades throughout this period - eg. 1915-1930 New Orleans and Dixieland , 1920s-1940 Swing and Big Band, 1940-1950 [ the contribution of Jazz to the War years ], 1960-1970 Jazz Bop , 1970s - Contemporary Jazz Fusion and modern interpretations.
Jazz is also a cultural form and lifestyle which is "played out" by some of the artists featured . Ken Burns addresses this sensitively and with reflective portraits of some of the icons of 20th Century music - Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis etc.
