The best book shelf speakers Mission ever made.
I'd read a lot of good things about Missions 75 range of speakers from the early 90s and decided I had to give the range a whirl. Before I commence I'll mention that I run a few budget systems of supposedly similar quality to the one running the 751's So I have a vintage Technics EQ (SH-GE70), Technics amp (SU-A900 MK2) fronted by my HTC One phone with Cambridge Audio AUD500 interconnects and Gale bi-wire and banana plugs powering these Missions. I have them mounted on top of a pair of Mission M33i floor standers which are filled with silver sand (as good as any dedicated stands I've ever had) and the sound is on another level to any other speakers I've ever owned. The early 751's (not the Freedom model) have a front firing bass port and a metal tweeter. I can only describe the sound as beautiful, they are very forward and quite bright speakers and this may well not be to every ones taste but the level of detail, sound stage depth and instrument placement at times leaves me with my mouth hanging open. There's not a lot of bass to be had from these but what there is is nice and controlled. These won't be any good for house parties or very large rooms but for the discerning listener if you can find a good pair you should snap them up. The build quality is excellent, I own quite a few pairs of modern Mission speakers and while the build quality of them is good these are so much better. The solidity and weight of them is incredible as is the finish. When I look at them I have to remind myself they're 20 years old they've aged so well. They are a bargain for the £40 to £120 they seem to go for on ebay when they rarely appear. I've read that a modern equivalent would set you back at least £600 and I'd be inclined to agree as these blow other speakers I own like Wharfedale Diamond 9.1's or Mission MX1's totally out of the water. I think you'd have to look at something like Monitor Audio's Silver RX2 for a modern equivalent that even approaches the standard set by these speakers. The bottom line is that these are excellent and I've been on a look out for a second pair for future spares or use in another set up ever since I got them. It's a shame Mission have gone down hill a bit since as these truly represent their high water mark.

Underrated powerhouses
These really seem to be the poor relation in the Mission range which seems a shame as they're fantastic speakers. I'll start by saying that I currently have 3 set ups I regularly listen to. The first is a high end Denon 5.1 amp running Mission M33i floorstanders as fronts, M31i rears and a M3C1i centre. It sounds amazing and having used all bar the centre speaker in 2 channel set ups I can vouch that they are excellent speakers. 2nd is a Vintage Technics HD-560 micro system running a pair of Wharfedale Diamond 9.1 stand mount speakers. Last is a Technics SU-A700 MK3 amp coupled with a Technics SH-GE70 EQ with the Mission MV4 speakers. I've tried many combinations and have owned loads of speakers from Tannoy to Monitor audio and these MV4s are way up there in terms of sound quality despite not being bi wirable. They have deep, rich bass and incredible stereo imaging. Despite owning suposedley better speakers that are all highly rated and have strong reviews and followings I keep finding myself gobsmacked how good these unfavoured Missions sound whenever I listen to them. Sure their floor standing bigger brothers are butt ugly but the MV4s are actually really good looking speakers, the stock image does them no favours in this department. In conclusion I'd highly recommend these speakers, when positioned right they'll blow you away. And thanks to their un popularity they seem to go for peanuts, what's not to like.
