We now live near the Monterey Bay in California, and we love it here, especially the beautiful outdoors. We used to live on an old horse farm on a hill in the fox-hunting country of central Ohio. We called it Hobby Horse Hill, after the book.

My Favorite Year
This movie is one of my favorite comedies -- laugh-out-loud, tears-in-your-eyes funny--filled with unforgettable vignettes, but containing a subtle message about public image vs. private, authentic self. Filmed in 1982, it's set in NY in the golden Age of live TV, on the set of a show probably reminiscent of Sid Caesar. It stars Peter O'Toole as Alan Swann, a fading, alcoholic former star of swashbuckling films (doubtlessly modeled after Erroll Flynn, who once appeared on "Your Show of Shows", albeit incident-free?). The movie follows the efforts of comedy writer Benjy Stone to keep Swann sober thus ensuring the actor's appearance on the show. After seeing the film, read the Wikipedia article on this movie for all the background. No point to repeat it all here.

Tassajara Bread Book is the best guide to bread baking
I have used a photocopy of parts of this book for baking bread since the mid-1970s. It is unequaled in its completeness and the clarity of its instructions. As I recently have more free time and began baking bread again, I decided to finally purchase a copy. If you are interested in baking bread, making sourdough, cooking pancakes, or any other type of bread, you should have this book.
