Jayhawks/Hollywood: the definitive recording
Neither deliberately retro or self-conscious Americana, the clear harmonies and meshed guitar work simultaneously remind us of Neil Young, Gram Parsons, and the Burritos - but without being arch or obvious. The songs fly off the record, each pretty much perfectly formed; the lyrics wrench, beguile, and intrigue; the guitars fuzz and swoop. Impossible not to adore, even if none of the references are your cup of meat.

Really exceptional value; if you need a plug, buy a Permaplug. They're funky and practical, and purchasing a box brings 10 times the joy.

Jayhawks restate the Americana manifesto
OK...the harmonies have that quality of being generated by family members rather than friends, so neatly wrought is their empathy on the best songs. Ahh yes,,,those SONGS. Well, forget the outtakes on the Legacy edition - the reason I've bought the original is because this portfolio of songs is, like the JHk's Hollywood Town Hall, an epicly fine bunch of tunes. And the outtakes devalue the currency - so buy THIS one...Not quite the same quality of crisp Tele guitarwork meets fuzz/fizz Les Paul into broken speakers vibe as is apparent on the Town Hall set, but very close. The best tracks (Two Hearts, truly sublime...Miss Williams Guitar, cheesy but glorious) ) refer of course to the heritage of Gram, Neil, the Burritos, the Hank W dynasty l, ll, and lll, and a zillion others who lurked on the periphery of all those multiply hybridised American musical forms inhabiting the immediate postwar period and next three decades. The Jayhawks: SO worrying that they're not hugely more popular, or was it that they couldn't/wouldn't clean up like those nice Kings of Leon boys?
