A Little More to the Story
The Blu Ray transfer is good, but because this is a "found footage" movie it's inherently grainy. Of course it's a lot better than DVD, but you may not be blown away by the picture like other Blu Ray transfers due to the way the movie was made. The biggest upgrade has to do with content, specifically the "Special Investigation Mode." It plays the movie (in a smaller screen) while the "Department of Defense" briefs you by scrolling text and animation at the bottom of the screen. They also have a GPS "tracker" that shows where on Long Island the events were taking place. So, if you liked the movie but wanted to know more about the story, this version is worth checking out. And yes it still has all the previous special features of the DVD.

Cheesy fun!!
The Blu Ray transfer of the movie is excellent. It's a straight upgrade from the Ultimate Edition DVD, which is the best available DVD format for Bond films. Unlike some of the Bond films from the 60s, you can really tell a significant difference with this Blu Ray. As for the movie, some critics didn't like the over-the-top nature of the film, especially the ending. Then again it's James Bond and it's still a fun ride. It has everything you expect from a Bond film--exotic locations, great action sequences, fun gadgets, classic villans, etc. It's well-polished on a grand scale, even if the outer-space finale was a clear attempt to capitalize on the Star Wars craze going on at the time. It's a bit taken for granted today how right they got the Space Shuttle design, which was still in the developmental stages and not yet well known. Yes it's cheesy at times, but it never takes itself too seriously and in the end a worthy Bond installment!

A Must for all ALIENS fans
This set is the best and most complete edition of ALIENS you can find, mainly because it includes the original theatrical release, which is so hard to find anywhere outside of VHS. The extended version is really the better edition of the film, but there's nothing wrong with the original either, which moves along at a better pace. However, the extended version is now the standard, and is the only one available in almost every DVD set. More importantly, they are disappointing in the limited number of special features available. ALIEN, for example, was given a much better treatment on other DVD releases concerning special features, but ALIENS was not much more than just the special edition, until they got it right with this set. The 2-disc set was first (and still) available in the impressive Quadrilogy collection, but was thankfully made available individually for those who didn't want to deal with the disappointing last two installments. The extras include cast & crew commentary, interviews, and features, but the biggest "extra" is to have the original theatrical release again. It's nice to see, even if for nostalgia's sake, the version we were all first blown away by.
