Fairport Convention live from 1990
I saw this on Ebay and just had to buy it as I saw them at Spinney Hill Northampton playing these songs back in 1990. It's just under an hour of their "Red and Gold" concert.
So waht's special about this DVD and why should you buy it? Well, for a start the line-up boasts the best rhythm section of all their line-ups, namely Dave Pegg on bass and Dave Mattacks on drums. They are sublime. Tight, flawless and effortless. Add in Maart Allcock's guitar/mandola and keyboard playing and Simon Nicol's excellent vocals and guitar playing and it could be the band to end all bands. But it doesn't stop there because Ric Sander's virtuoso is unbelievable. They are a truly amazing band and all credit to them for keeping at it for 40 years and still evolving, still wowing the audiences night after night.
What about the songs? What about a stunning version of "From a distance" that Simon Nicol recorded at least two years before Bette Midler/Cliff Richard et al? There are some great traditional and contemporary folk songs sung and played as only Fairport can, including Ralph McTell's "Red and Gold"- beautiful. My favourite is "London River" for a special reason. It was written by a lovely guy called Rod Shearman and he and I played the West London pub and folk club circuit in a band called "Captain Swing" in the early 70s. I can't tell you how many times I sang that song before it was picked up by other artists and to hear the Fairports sing it just blew me away. You might have guessed that I'm a lifelong fan of theirs BTW.
They even manage to breathe life into "Matty Groves" and "Meet on the ledge" after god knows how many performances over 40 years.
If you want to see the best British folk-rock group of all time, true pioneers and innovators at their very best- then this DVD is for you

Richard Thompson- guitar genius
3 of 3 found this helpful I've been a fan of Richard Thompson since the sixties (he's a few months older than me.) I saw the Fairport Convention at the Saville Theatre in 1967 and was a fan for life. Many years later in 2006 I saw Richard & Danny Thompson in concert in Northampton and it confirmed what I'd known all along, that he's the most original vituoso musician that I've evr seen/heard. I've heard his guitar solos and marvelled at how he can wring so much emotion out of his guitar without once resorting to cliche and I decided it was time to buy a DVD to see if I could figure out exactly what he was doing when that amazing sound came out of the speakers. Yes, you guessed it, I'm a guitar player too, although there have been times when I wanted to take an axe to my axe after seeing the great RT in concert or listening to him on CD. Bidding was quite fierce for the DVD. I lost out on another dvd of a different concert, but I'm pleased to say I was successful this time. Unfortunately he now lives in the US so we don't get to see him very often in the UK. Richard Thompson concerts are always special, i've seen one live and have two dvd's of other concerts. They are all different! He has a great rapport with the crowd and is very entertaining with a dry sense of humour. So, having watched his fingers during his solos, can I now play like him? Er, no. It's mesmerising, intoxicating and ultimately infuriating. The man's a genius. End of story. Check him out for yourself.
