Great book for children or adults.
This book is one of a follow-on series from The Circle of Magic, called The Circle Opens. The first 4 books are about 4 friends who are mages, and how they learn to use their magic. In the second series, all 4 are away from their home at Winding Circle, travelling with their teachers. They each find other children with magic powers, who they have to teach how to control and use their magic. Cold Fire is about Daja, who is a fire mage and smith. Not only does she have to help twin girls with their magic, but there is also the problem of who is setting fires that destroy wooden buildings in the frozen north. I like all the books in both series and Daja is a great character.

Great book, wonderful story.
Brilliant book, I love all of the Heralds of Valdemar series. I read it first years ago, borrowed from the local library, but they don't have copies of any of this series any more, so I am collecting them myself. Valdemar was founded by a group who fled an evil ruler in their own land. Their leader wanted to be sure that they always had good rulers, so he prayed to various gods and used magic too and the result was the Companions, who look like white horses but are as intelligent as humans and have special bonds with their Heralds. They are very particular about who they Choose to bond with and the law is that the Monarch has to be a Herald, so an evil person would not be Chosen and could not rule the country. This story is about Talia, who was Chosen by a Companion called Rolan when she is 13 and trained as a Herald. This is the third book about her and I loved all of them.

Great book by one of my favourite authors
I love Mercedes Lackey's Heralds of Valdemar books and this was no exception. I found one of the later books about Mags, the hero of this sub-series, at the library, loved it, wanted to read the rest. They didn't have Foundation in the county libraries, so I bought my own copy. Glad I did. Great story, exciting adventure and being the first book about Mags & Dallen, it sets the scene for the later books.
