Teach Reading Skills While Teaching Science.
The Timed Readings Plus in Science are an excellent classroom resource. I have used these books with great success in my classes. What I love about these books is that the students are learning solid science concepts while they are at the same time increasing their reading comprehension skills. The books make a great "warm up". or bell work activity. The students start reading a passage from the books when the bell rings to start class. This makes excellent use of limited class time. The students are learning while role is being taken, papers are being passed out, and other required teacher tasks are completed. Correcting the readings provides excellent prompts for classroom discussions of the science concepts being studied. I choose readings that reinforce what I am presently teaching in my class. There are ten books in the series and each book has fifty readings. This provides many different topics to choose from. These books help accomplice the important task of teaching reading in the content area. I encourage middle school science teachers that are concerned about increasing the reading skills of their students to purchase and use these books in their classrooms.
