A roguelike for the DS
I'm really enjoying this game. I've read quite a few negative reviews on other sites, but that is, I think, often down to the reviewers not quite understanding this style of game, especially with regard to perma-death. Suffice it to say that if you know of and like NetHack, then you're going to like this. My favourite part is "Fay's Puzzles", which is a sub-game of fifty little vignettes or tactical scenarios which introduce you to most of the items which can be found in the main game, and steer you towards an often unexpected combination of use to achieve a goal. One slight departure from the usual Roguelikes is that in perma-death you don't lose absolutely everything. Items can be stored along the way (depriving you of their use in that play-through) and picked up again on subsequent runs. The game also has a slightly RPG-like story running through it, and NPCs (non-player characters) will behave differently on subsequent runs depending on previous actions. Graphics and music complement the gameplay perfectly, and add a rather stylish touch in an area Roguelikes are not renowned for. I'd like to rate the game as "Very Good": between "Good" and "Excellent". A four-and-a-half out of five. So rounding down to "Good" seems appropriately Rogue-like in its harshness!
