Chapelle's Miracle
Dave Chapelle's appeal helped shape a special event which enabled many of the most influential, creative and individual black music artists to collaborate. The Block Party was born, designed to show these artists in a natural light just vibing and basically just hanging out for the day where the party was thrown in a secret New York location. As the whole event was geared around these artists and their music I would recommend this soundtrack as it documents the event and the artists as it happened. Chapelle's current influence is evident by the stellar line up that he was able to gather, Dead Pres, Talib Kweli even the hugely talented and outspoken Kanye West was present, the hip hop artists mixed well with the more soulful influences of Jill Scott and Erykah Badu, with the Roots representing in a very real way. The whole event and therefore this soundtrack has a very organic feel to it that sucks you in and engages you and makes you want to blow the dust of some of those albums you haven't listened to in a while as well as making you wish you had the chance to have been there. One major disappointment is that one of the events high points was seeing the Fugees reunite on stage for the first time in years is missing from the soundtrack, getting Pras, Clef and especially Lauren Hill back in the same room and even on stage together is testament to Chapellle's current social status and would have made the album complete. Described as a Miracle, this soundtrack brings together many artists with real messages and sees them as 'just people' who really should hang out more and make excellent music when the results are as complete an potent as this, it should happen every week.
