Entry level radio with some high end features.
1 of 1 found this helpful The Tecsun pl-380 is excellent value. The radio is compact but comes with a surprisingly large number of powerful features.
The sound quality is crisp and clear when taking into account the size of the radio and speaker. The digital display is well
set out and conveys how the radio is operating clearly. There are too many features to list here, but I do like the 'Easy Tune
Method' (ETM). The ETM will scan for example the shortwave bands and store a list of active frequencies which can be sampled
by turning the encoder tuning control. The radio has a 550 total memory capacity which I find adequate.
The radio is very sensitive on the shortwave and FM bands in particular. My reason for purchasing this set was for shortave
listening. This is a great entry level radio into the shortwave listening hobby and compact making it ideal for travel.
There are higher end radios in the Tecsun range but for now this little gem meets my requirements very well.

A new fuse to bring life back to a vintage power supply.
The new fuse fitted into my vintage power supply snugly and it was back up and running in no time. I tested the new fuse with an overload condition and it did the job of protecting the power supply. It was easy to replace it.

Great entry level DMR radio and excellent value for the money.
The Baofeng DM-5R is a great little DMR hand-held radio. It has some great features and a few features to be aware of.
To program the DM-5R requires a CPS shared with the RD-5R and this is available for download on the Radioditty web site. The old DM-5R CPS found on the Baofeng web site no longer communicates with this version (3) of the DM-5R. I experienced a problem downloading the RD-5R CPS from the Radioditty web site because it was blocked by my Norton internet security. I got around this by using a Linux box to download the file and then transfer it to my Windows 10 pc.
The DM-5R is restricted to 128 channels and a small user database. However it is
a very low cost entry level DMR radio. The radio is light and is easily carried about in a pocket when out in the field. The display is small but easy to read in all light conditions, unlike the Ailunce HD-1 or TYT MD-380 which lose clarity in bright sunlight.
The DM-5R shares its accessories withe the UV-5R series of radios except for the programming lead. This makes it convenient to use batteries, headsets and speaker mikes, chargers etc from the UV-5R range that I have already to hand.
The radio performs well, audio is clear and crisp on DMR. I have not tried analogue with the radio. Battery life is good, similar to the UV-5R range. I can communicate with a Radioditty GD-77 and Ailunce HD-1 on simplex. The radio is able to monitor my local DMR repeaters and my MMDVM hotspot. I have tried to set the radio for promiscuous mode but this does not seem to be available. The
DM-5R seems quite sensitive when considering the low cost circuitry in this radio.
So to sum it up, the DM-5R version 3 is a great little entry level DMR radio at a super low price of around 50 ukp. I may well consider the purchase of a second DM-5R at this price.
