Lincoln's Perilous 13 Day Train Ride to Inauguration
Outstanding, highly readable, good storytelling account of Lincon's 13 day journey from Springfield, Illinois to Washington DC for inauguration. Meanwhile Jeff Davis was winding his way to Montgomery, Alabama to become the President of the new Confederacy. It's amazing based on what happened that Lincoln was not assassinated along the way as the country was in an even bigger crisis than it is today. Lincoln was the long shot of all time for the job of President and only elected as the first Republican to hold the office because the Democrats split apart and ran two candidates. He was viewed by sophisticated Easterners as not up to the job but turned out to be perhaps the only man capable of preserving the Union through a bloody civil war to come. He was nearly crushed to death by an onrushing crowd of well wishers during a stop in Buffalo, New York. Destiny and fate were working overtime to get him to the inauguration in one piece.
