Why use Arctic Silver compound
I recently purchased a couple large tubes of Arctic Silver. I build computers up from time to time, and of late purchase server equipment on the surplus market. Many are over 8 years old and have not been looked at, or in some cases repaired well enough to sell as working but poorly assembled. One such machine burned out the CPU on the fourth time I turned it on. During replacement I found a poorly assembled Heat Sink with too much of a sub-standard heat sink compound which had dried out over time and lost it's ability to conduct heat away from the CPU. It looked like a dry riverbed, deep cracks in it, and actually insulating the CPU from the Heat Sink assembly. I repaired it and assembled it using a razor blade to spread a thin coating over the entire surface. Emphasizing thin... which would ensure that the compound (Arctic Silver) would conduct heat away successfully.
I realized then that all of the machines I buy should be inspected before placing them in service. The very expensive CPU's on some of these cost nearly $1000 when new, not too many years ago. Still costing between $40 and $80 a pair this can put a dent in your pocket.
Arctic Silver is the best tested, and what I will use.
