    High powered laptop, modern styling
The Toshiba Equium A60 is another well made laptop from Toshiba. The build quality is streets ahead of many of the modern budget models from Acer and Dell. I bought the 2.8 Pentium 4 model which has hyper threading and is really fast. Dual core grabs the buyers attention but common sense says that a dual core 1.6 is only ever going to run at the speed of the core, which of couse is still 1.6. The Toshiba has a stonking 2.8 P4 processor which means real power. Good points - great styling, relatively lightweight and easy to upgrade. Bad points - these like any other laptop are prone to overheating if used for a long time in a dusty environment because they suck in air and blow it out through a fine radiator, which acts as a seive which traps dust and dirt and can end up with a layer of lint which then causes the fan to come on more and more until you get an overheating problem. It takes less than 20 minutes though to pop the screen assembly off, take the keyboard out and lift the top cover to expose the fan assembly. You can give the inside a good dust out and clear the build up from the heatsink cooling assembly. Do it properly by removing the whole assembly by loosening the 4 main screws and 1 side support screw and while you are in there clean off and renew the heatsink compound with a good quality paste. The difference can be dramatic and will ensure a long and happy life - laptops tend to run fairly hot so blocking off most of the cooling radiator is not going to help!! Like some other models this has on-board memory that is built onto the motherboard and some users report failure of that module. Extra memory is easy to add by removing one access panel on the bottom and popping in some PC2100 memory. Typically these come with either 256 or 512MB on board memory and the max size of the upgrade is 1GB so you can go to either 1.25 or 1.5GB at a fairly low cost. The A60 will run Windows 7 even with just 512MB of memory available but the graphics and sound will need the drivers updating. Some A60s have the option of a wireless card but many do not have the carrier on the motherboard so don't go and buy a mini PCI card before you check there is actually somewhere to put it. Hard drive simply pops out of the side and is a standard IDE type drive not the later SATA type. Parts are cheap since this was a very popular model. The right hand hinge is a weakness because people are lazy and open the lid one handed, which tends to put more force on that hinge. Batteries are good value - the standard is 8 cell but you can get a 12 cell battery for longer life but at a premium cost. The standard build of XP comes with a load of Toshiba utilities which you probably want to remove at some stage and mine came with a proper reinstall DVD and didn't rely on a hidden partition on the hard drive which is useless if the hard drive fails! The BIOS is accessed by keeping the ESC key pressed when the laptop powers up - not too many options but how often do you need to play around in there anyway? All in all a perfectly capable laptop with excellent graphics, let down a bit by tinny sound from the tiny speakers but a good work horse that is more reliable than it gets credit for as long as the cooling system is kept clean, but that applies to almost any other laptop too.

Acer Aspire 1350 - AMD Powered Laptop
I've now owned two of these - both the XP2400 version which uses AMD's first mobile chip in a laptop. The build quality is superb with everything fitting well and no signs of wear even after several years use. The panel fit is excellent, including the bottom covers for the memory. The screen hinges are very good and both of mine were as good as the day they were bought even after a lot of useage. They are also very simple to replace, unlike a Toshiba that I dismantled that was an absolute nightmare and appeared to be the result of some designer who was taking LSD or some other substance at the time he put pen to paper!! The keyboard is well laid out but the space bar needs a good push near the centre to register the keystroke. Both of mine were the 14inch screen version, though a 15 inch was offered as an option and is a popular upgrade which is very simple to fit. I believe the screen has some sort of sensor so that optimum brightness is always available without adjusting the brightness controls. Battery life even when new was not brilliant - about 90 minutes was doing well. This is where AMD had a lot of learning to do to catch up with Intel's mobile chips that had been used in laptops for years. Newer AMD based laptops are apparently much better on battery life but for most people using the Acer Aspire 1350 this was never really an issue because it was an excellent desktop replacement and would be used on the mains anyway. Cooling is very efficient with the 2400 having a single powerful fan that cycles on and off at varying intervals depending on workload at the time. The more powerful (and much rarer) 2600 and 2800 mobile versions had a twin fan cooling assembly where the smaller fan ran constantly with the larger fan cutting in and out when needed. Although more efficient this setup was considerably noisier than the single fan system which is perfectly adequate. Graphics are perfectly acceptable with up to 65MB of video RAM available which is shared with the main system memory. My first 1350 came with just 256MB of memory which was quickly upgraded to 512 and made a nice differece. My second one was upgraded to use two 512MB modules giving 1GB or memory for excellent performance. As a general purpose laptop that can be used for mobile work when needed the Acer Aspire 1350 is perfectly adequate with excellent build quality that gives the impression it will last a very long time. Compared to some Dell machines that I have used and dismantled the Acers are streets ahead. Perhaps that is why Ferrari licence the Ferrari Acer versions. There are lighter, faster and obviously more expensive laptops about but for the money you are getting excellent value for money.
