Motorola 6800 vintage microprocessor
One of the original popular microprocessors from the 1970s. The 6800 was an 8-bit microprocessor designed and first manufactured by Motorola in 1974. The 6800 architecture and instruction set were influenced by the then popular Digital Equipment Corporation PDP-11 mini computer. The 6800 has a 16-bit address bus that can directly access 64 KB of memory and an 8-bit bi-directional data bus. It has 72 instructions with seven addressing modes for a total of 197 opcodes. The original MC6800 could have a clock frequency of up to 1 MHz. Later versions had a maximum clock frequency of 2 MHz. The 6800 was the main CPU for numerous early microcomputers developed in the 1970s, including the MITS Altair 680 and the SWTPC 6800 computers. The architecture and instruction set of the 6800 were easy for beginners to understand and Heathkit developed a microprocessor course and the ET-3400 6800 trainer.
