The History of the Universe (Astronomers' Universe) (Paperback), . 9783319227436

The best survey of recent major developments in the subject for the general reader.
I have been interested in cosmology for many years, although I have no training in physics or astronomy, and I have been aware of some recent major shifts and discoveries (accelerating expansion of the universe, confirmation of the Higgs Boson at LHC, etc.) but I have struggled to fit all the pieces of the jigsaw together. I cannot say that as a result of reading this book I now understand it, but this is by far the most helpful text I have read. David Lyth manages to avoid patronising the reader, because he starts from the position that ignorance is nothing to be ashamed of, and we can all gain knowledge by patiently building up a coherent picture based on scientific method. This allows him to start from the basic foundations and construct a sensible outline, incorporating the recent discoveries which seem utterly alien to our everyday experience. He address the limitations of human perception and consciousness as an aside along the way, without abandoning the solid achievements of science. I have now read the book twice and it is clear that I will need to read it a few times more before it stops yielding new insight. The broad picture has emerged, and now each paragraph shines a light into the obscure corners. Highly recommended.
