Tudor Warship Mary Rose (Anatomy of the Ship) by Douglas McElvogue
13 Dec, 2016
Detailed and fascinating look at ancient shipbuilding
This paperback (my copy is anyway) provides very clear and detailed drawings of every aspect of the remains of the Mary Rose, which capsized and sank in 1545 in front of its owner Henry VIII. How the hull was built, how the decks were constructed, how the various large arms looked and worked ... It is all there. Of course, given that the physical remains consist of roughly half the hull without the fore and after castle structures, some of the reconstructions here are necessarily conjectural based on physical evidence and the one contemporary portrait of the ship on the Anthony Roll. Suffice to say, if that portrait is accurate, the castles towered three full decks above the waist of the ship! The good news for those aboard would be that they could shoot down at enemy decks. The bad news is a ship that is very top heavy and prone to instability, as her sudden capsize amply demonstrates. Very rewarding book!

Another spectacular book of paintings by the pre-eminent artist portraying aircraft in their historic settings. Commentary by WW II aviators makes it even better.
Dragon 7053 Uss Arizona BB-39 1941 Premium Edition 1:700 New Boxed 1610-09-79
09 Mar, 2021
Considered the best 1/700 scale kit of the USS Arizona
Dragon made three versions of the 1/700 USS Arizona. This is the second one, and was a significant improvement over the first, which used odd materials for some of the parts. This one is all styrene and also contains brass main barrels and photo etch railings etc. The third version is identical to this one except it added two scale "Kate" Japanese dive bombers. Real wood decks and an extensive photo etch sheet are available for this kit. Add your skill to these ingredients and you can create a truly magnificent miniature of this famous ship. Be aware, though, that 1/700 is a very small scale (though universally popular for this reason) and dealing with tiny parts is part of the deal.
