An archival quality release of one of Prince’s masterpieces
Although the packaging isn’t as nice as the more recent Sign o the Times Super Deluxe Edition, the 1999 set is a must have if you are a Prince fan. Two shows from the 1999 tour (one on DVD) plus two entire discs of unreleased tracks. Even knowing Prince’s work process I was astonished by how good and how finished these tracks sound. He could have put together another classic album from these songs had he chosen to.
The DVD is of great quality so long as you have realistic expectations. This was not filmed for broadcast like the recently released Syracuse 85 show, so of course it doesn’t look nearly as good. But it offers a great contrast to that show — it’s from the first leg of the 1999 tour, before the single for Little Red Corvette released. Prince is not yet the superstar he was on the Purple Rain tour.
