This model and later ones in the same product line are worth considering.
Excellent starter digital camera. Capabilities grow with user experience - offers spot metering, exposure compensation and other features unusual on a basic model with the result of good photos and not just snapshots.
Probably near top of its class performance wise in price range at the time of launch. Would suit novice and experienced photographer.

Ease of use and features. Was the flagship Canon flashgun before the introduction of the radio triggered 600EX RT.

EOS 400D - good camera several years (new models) on.
Excellent buy for new and experienced photographer alike. This camera would suit just about anyone except a professional sports photographer who might want a body capable of faster than 3 frames/sec. In six years of using a 400D, I have never outgrown its capabilities and am still learning what it can do, even now.
Ease of use is good, with all settings relevant to the shot displayed clearly on the LCD screen. 1.6x frame factor from APS-C sensor a distinct advantage for portait/wildlife photography.
