captivating, but typical nordic story of struggle and maybe redemption

I'm only partly through the book, about 40%. But the writing is very nice, images strong. Story in the middle ages, fascinating look back at the times. It's a compelling read, and the writing is highly "available," meaning although it is a looong book at over 1100 pages, it begins cleanly, clearly, and grippingly, and so it is not necessary to trudge for a bit to get into the story. You are there from page one. I don't need to finish the book in order to be able to say I highly recommend that you read the book. I know that, however it ends, I will want more.

cynical, poignant, hilarious, and a great view of the military world

This book, written during and after World War One, offers a raucous, lowbrow but very funny humor as Hašek pokes fun at the Austrian military. His comments, however, offer a broader swath as they certainly apply to many many wars and the pointlessness and futility, even the idiocy of the entire process. I laughed out loud all the way through. Švejk is a masterpiece, both the character and the book. And the accompanying drawings are wonderful as well, even if they may not depict Švejk in the way Hašek saw him. Highly recommended.
