Needs to rest squarely on the head to light, due to safety sensors. Quality item.

The helmet/cap has to be resting down above head to start. There is some kind of sensor that will not start if it is too far away from the head. This is a safety feature. I bought the less expensive unit with fewer lights. Easy to use, if you know it needs to be resting squarely on the head.
