1996 BMW Z3... An Awesome First Year Vehicle!
8 of 8 found this helpful My 1996 Z3 is my first. I say "first" because I will likely own more in the future. When I was in the market, I automatically disqualified the four-cylinder version. I had driven both the four and the six and the power difference was quite noticeable. Then gas spiked to over four and nearly five dollars a gallon. When I looked at the difference between the rated mileage between the two engines, I started taking a second look at the little four bangers. I'm glad I did. I got an incredible deal on a 96 Z3 with new paint, new upholstery and a rebuilt four-cylinder engine. It run's PERFECTLY! And it literally sips gas. I easily pull 32-33mpg with mid grade gasoline and recently got a whopping 36.8mpg using premium... with a passenger and fully loaded trunk no less! I was VERY impressed. I was concerned the little four would have problems getting over the passes between California and Oregon but the car had power to spare. In a race from zero to sixty, this car will lose EVERY TIME but it catches up quickly and does not strain in the least at high speeds.
I had heard rumors that these cars handle like they are on rails. It's absolutely true. I routinely can double the posted speed limit on curves and in some cases almost triple without feeling I'm losing control. What this car lacks in 0-60 speed it more than makes up in maneuverability. I don't miss the power of a larger engine at all and LOVE the economy! My only regret is that when I upgrade to a later model or to a Z4, I won't have the four-cylinder option! The car also has awesome leg room... something I lacked on my last Cadillac!
The down sides of this car are few but there are some. The cruise control is a bit jerky at times. I don't know if that's just my car or an issue with the series. Mine also lacks a keyless entry, which I would have thought would have been standard on a BMW. It does have an "almost" keyless entry system... both doors will unlock when you unlock one with the key. At least it's suppose to... that system is not working on my car and it's really not worth looking into to get fixed since a key has to be used either way. Those are my only complaints... oh... and the factory radio... the channel display doesn't work so you can't tell what channel you are on at any given time. That's a minor issue for me though as I rarely listen to the radio. The same kind of display is used for the clock and it's so dim it's invisible during daylight, but again, I wear a wristwatch so who cares!
The suspension is very stiff. I don't take this as a problem though; it's just the price you pay for great maneuverability. There some minor interior issues relating to quality I noticed... the glove box door is a little loose and the liner in the convertible top well is separated a little from where it connects to the edges. But this is a 96... some things should be expected with age.
My overall impression of this car is that I absolutely love it. My next car will be an early 2000's Z3 or a Z4, and oh... did I mention I love this car???

Great entry to FLIR
I was first exposed to FLIR when my son showed me the feature on his phone. It was built in on his but I was so impressed I did a little research to see if there was a compatible option for my phone. That's when I found the FLIR One. It's affordable price and positive reviews made me comfortable making a purchase and I have not been disappointed. I compared it's specs to professional units and found it does not have near the resolution of a $5000 device but my uses were more basic... finding relative hot spots or cool spots quickly and inexpensively. One use for example... finding people crouching behind bushes... finding a recently parked car in a parking garage... finding cool spots around windows and such. For these purposes it works really well. Another interesting application... a friend had an overheating phone and I was able to pinpoint the hot spot instantly... and it wasn't the battery!
The software worked perfectly first time and for my light and basic uses, I've been very pleased.
I think for any non professional that would like rudimentary FLIR function for something less than the cost of a low end used car, the FLIR One is well worth a look.

Exactly what I needed
My rework station arrived sooner than expected and all components were there with no damage or defects. The unit powered up and functioned exactly as advertised. My need for this type of tool is very limited so I expect it will have an extended lifespan. I have read other reviews where there were issues and concerns relative to workmanship, quality and durability. For my occasional use, I find this unit more than adequate and I have no problem recommending it for the light or occasional user.
