These docking stations are a bit finicky...
These docking stations are a bit finicky. Once you get them working, they are great. The G5 (this one) seems to be the most usable of the lot, and the G5 Essential (which looks the same but does not have the same specifications) is also reasonably usable. For recent computer builds, you might not want to use the older models in this line.

A great little phone!
The Motorola V195 (available in gray) and the almost-identical V195s (available in blue) are fantastic, inexpensive, capable phones. They are quad-band GSM, so if they are unlocked, you can use them almost anywhere in the world. They tend to have a long battery life, a crisp, clear, color screen, and buttons that are big enough for pudgy fingers to push. There is no camera, so you won't have to leave it behind where cameras are prohibited, and you won't need to worry about your kids running up big bills (and maybe attracting unwanted attention) sending pictures back and forth.
The one thing I like best is the non-slip finish on the case. This phone is actually hard to drop!
Watch out for these minor issues:
1. The phone can use several different batteries of different capacities, and counterfeit batteries are readily available. Stick with a real Motorola battery if at all possible - either the BT-50 or the slightly higher capacity BT-60. Both fit without needing to swap the battery door.
2. Motorola has released information about counterfeit wall chargers and car chargers. Stick with OEM chargers, and compare them to the Motorola counterfeit alert.
3. These phones are no longer manufactured. Those that are for sale "new" are old stock, or sometimes demos. You might not get like-new performance out of a battery that has been on the shelf for a couple of years.

Small and solid
The HP Elitebook 820 G1 probably does not lead the market in any one feature, but it is a well-balanced, very effective solution. It could be a bit smaller if it were to be considered ultraportable. But it is small enough to be easy to carry around. The screen, which is a bit larger than most ultraportables, is large enough that my old eyes can decipher what it shows. The weight is good, but unremarkable. The construction, though, is impressive - it appears to have a magnesium-alloy frame and every component is well-attached to it. The battery is a bit unusual - it has been shaped to fit the rather limited internal space. As a result, there are not as many aftermarket batteries available as there are for other HP notebooks. And, for those of us who like to use docking stations, this unit is fully compatible with HP's D9Y32AA dock.
All in all, it is a good, reasonably-powerful, easy-to-tote notebook computer, and it should meet my needs for quite a few years.
