Witter ZX304 Bike Carrier - Mountain Bikes

It has a solid, decent light board.
The tilit mechanism works well.
It has a couple of straps that need to hook onto bodywork to stabilise it, rather than relying on the tow hitch alone.
The lever could probably do with being longer. If you can comfortably do it up, the carrier can swing. If you stop the swing, you need to be pretty strong.
And mounting it is really a two man job.
If you drive with it empty. you must remember to secure the arms. After one weekend of use, dinks in the paint work and wear patches appeared on at least two of the support arms after a short trip where I forgot.
It would probably work fine with road bikes, or hard tails. However, with full suspension MTBs, it struggles a bit.
1) the channels are too close together. The bikes foul each other and have to be well padded. If you've boost wheels, you might not get them on at all.
2) the clamp arms foul the variously shaped top tubing of full suspension bikes. You have to think pretty carefully about how you thread the arms over or through your frames and shocks. Get it wrong and you'll rub the frames.
3) Arguably, and there was a bit, 2.3/2.4 tyres make threading/unhreading the plastic ratchet clips overly awkward.
4) A few wear points that I really hope aren't from bike contact (I think that an arm fouled a cable housing) appeared after the first (and only) time I used it.
5) 4 full suspension bikes, plus the ample weight of the carrier, probably limit the number of cars you can legally put this on, fully loaded. Think its about 75-85 Kg on Galaxy models. Fiestas are out.
In short, I don't think that this type of rack is suitable for MTB. It would probably be ideal for road bikes with simple top tubes.and I'd guess it would be a pretty good bit of kit in that case. It SHOULD be a case of dropping each bike on, fixing the clamp and securing the wheels.
With 4 MTB it took about 45-50 minutes of thought, swearing, unscrewing things, repositioning bikes., etc. Four did fit (which is probably near the legal limit), but luckily this got pared down to 3 bikes, one of which travelled in the car. The remaining two then did fit comfortably on the 4 bike rack...
Oh, and if you've an MTB, don't read this review until I've sold the carrier that I've just bought.
