Printer works well despite less than ideal packaging
Once I got the ink powder residue removed from all the inner working parts and installed new ink cartridges it worked fine. Apparently the old ink cartridges released some of their powder during shipment because the cartridges were not bagged to prevent spillage during rough handling by shipment (evidenced by punctured shipping box). Fortunately the printer was well wrapped in bubble-wrap or it surely would have been damaged.
