Feature loaded compact charger
6 of 6 found this helpful This is a feature loaded charger at a sensible price. The 12A output will deal with the largest of car and van batteries, however in the real world, you will likely want one of the lower settings like 4A to give your battery an easier time. A total of four charging options and four test options will help you keep your battery in tip top condition. A clear display gives a running commentary on the voltage and current going into the battery at any one time.
Two main charge modes are included, one for normal use and one for winter use to push a little extra voltage into the battery. A couple of auxilliary modes are present, a trickle charge which is handy for vehicles which get infrequent use and a recovery mode for batteries that have been left to go flat and don't take a decent charge any more.
Test modes comprise two static tests which show the % charge and CCA respectively, however the latter involves selecting the CCA (or EN) of your battery which can be a pain, see bad points below. A couple of live tests complete the picture, one to measure the low water mark when the starter is turned which is a great real world test for the cranking capability of the battery. Finally, an alternator test which will show if the alternator is OK or if further attention is required.
As a bonus, the unit can be clipped to the battery terminals and supply power to the vehicle while you take the battery off to change it - this is called the memory saver feature. This keeps power on the vehicle and can prevent problems with the alarm, radio codes and other headaches when the battery power is removed. Clearly, it needs to be plugged into the mains to provide the power...
GOOD POINTS: High current rating, lots of features including battery recovery and trickle charge, lightweight, velcro to keep cables tidy, memory saver feature, rubber bumper round the outside to protect the case, decent croc clips.
BAD POINTS: Nothing major really; When selecting the CCA, it would be good to hold the button down and let the number automatically ramp up. Going from the default 300CCA to 950CCA means pushing the up button 65 times. The manual is brief, some examples would be helpful.
