Recommended buy
At 8" by 5" it's too big for any normal pocket, but this is an excellent book - good quality, a nice 'feel' to it and with clear print that is easy to read. Though an absolute beginner myself I would certainly recommend it.

Battery charger that really works
A bought a BC-700 a few years ago and, with the number of rechargeable batteries I use, I felt it was time to buy a second one. More expensive that chargers you'll find in your local supermarket, perhaps, but the BC-700 is worth every penny. Quick delivery, too.
