The best carb kit your CJ could ask for
I struggled for months with the original Carter carb in my '85 CJ7. A previous owner had done the "nutter bypass" and removed a lot of emissions control junk which should be fine if done correctly. The Jeep ran very sloppy, barely idling in some cases and would sometimes die at stop lights or sudden drops in RPM. I verified all vacuum lines were tight and there were no air leaks. I pulled the Carter off and cleaned and rebuilt it, but the problems would just not go away. Finally, after hours and hours of troubleshooting and work, I threw my hands up, gave up entirely, and ordered this MC2100 from Gronk on multiple Jeep forum recommendations.
All I can say is WOW. The difference is astounding. The install process was relatively easy with Gronk's instructions, and he offers a lot of options in terms of choke, air cleaner, throttle type, and other preferences for your application. For me, the process took no more than 2 hours. After installing everything and firing it up for the first time it was an immediate HUGE improvement. Started easily on first turn with the choke halfway flipped. Idle was strong and smooth at 700 RPMs. Taking her out, mid range and WOT were cleaner and smoother. Idle returns easily to normal when rolling to a stop, even after cruising for 15-20 minutes without stopping. The first drive around town was as if I was in a brand new vehicle.
Overall, I cannot overstate how happy I am with this purchase. Everything, I mean EVERYTHING, you need to install this carb and hit the road are included. Knowing what I know now I would easily have paid twice the amount for the peace of mind. You need a little bit of under the hood know-how to get everything installed quickly, but even if you are a relative beginner the instructions are solid.
If I meet someone with a CJ who is having issues, I will 100% recommend this carb kit to them. The only proof I need is my roaring 258 that purrs like a kitten. Thanks Gronk!
