Good board with a few quirks.
1 of 1 found this helpful This board is the most common workstation/server board for single socket LGA 2011 V1/V2 currently available.
It's a bery capable board, it has plenty of DIMM slots that support Registered ECC RAM, and several V2 CPUs.
It would have been nice to have a BMC for remote management, but I knew it didn't have one when i was buying.
The board has several quirks that make it a challenge to use in a custom build.
the CPU fan header is a 5 pin proprietary header used by HP, so the easiest way around this is to use a HP cooler *the 6-pin tower cooler for the Z640 works perfectly fine.
If you want to use the front panel headers for the USB2 & 3 a modification has be be made to the headers to force the board to think the connector is connected to the system.
The firewire connector also reports an error if it's not connected, and I was not able to find out how to modify the header to force detection, but you can disable firewire in the BIOS so no errors are reported.
The board also uses an ambient temperature sensor using a 2N2222 NPN transistor, this has to be present to stop the fans being locked to 100%.
The memory cooling shield has to be present, or at least a fan has to be connected to its header, this also has to be connected to stop the 100% fan issue.

A Must Have for ThinkPad Owners
The dock is a fantastic way of expanding the capabilities of the device by providing extra USB ports and display connectors, so you can have a station setup at a desk to connect to a larger monitor but still be able to retain the ThinkPad's portability.

Excellent Keyboard, Backlight Very Useful.
1 of 1 found this helpful Backlight really improves the usability of the X230 in low light without using the ThinkLight.
Keyboard is good quality and has less flex than the nob-backlit model because of it's extra thickness.
Keys do have a glossy finish, and so have a different feel to some other x230 keyboards with matte keys, so this may put some users off.
The backlight has two intensity settings toggled using the ThinkLight button (fn + space) and activates the ThinkLight on the third toggle, but the ThinkLight can be completely disabled in BIOS or Lenovo Vantage so only the keyboard backlight activates.
Backlight shines through the lettering as well as around the keys, but this was hard to demonstrate in the below images due to it being daylight.
It'd be nice if the backlight would automatically activate when typing, but this is just a limitation of the x230 itself.
Overall a good quality backlit keyboard for the x230, keyboard feels like the usual good quality x230 keyboard.
