Road movie with a difference (this one's not about pace)
Very gentle and charming tale of rural America - slow throughout, sometimes down to crawling pace. The central theme's good and there are many atmospheric scenes, though sometimes marred by quirky ideas (eg. very long shots with the audio equally distant - the characters are conversing far away but we can't hear what they're saying to each other). Some events seemed inexplicable, but might come clear at a second viewing. Slight tendency towards homespun philosophy and mawkish sentimentalism, but probably no more than normal in the world of cinema. Not for the impatient.

upset a slug today
This product really works. We use it to protect tender young plants; stick the tape all around a margarine tub (or similar), cut the bottom of the tub out, and press it into the soil around a seedling. Apparently it gives slugs a shock because of electrolytic action or something. The adhesive seems to be strong enough to last. When the copper gets a bit dull, you can shine it up with a nylon scourer. In the polytunnel you can easily see the difference between the plants we protected and the ones we didn't. Well worth the money if you're fed up with seeing your plants all nibbled to death.

Great video about an extraordinary man
If you don't know much about what Andy Goldsworthy does for a living, this DVD will be a real eye-opener. Working entirely with objects provided by nature, he creates the most ingenious and often delicate sculptures and constructions. In one scene he's using a penknife but mostly he does everything with his bare hands. Some of his work is designed to be seen briefly before it's washed away by the tide or blown away by the wind, while other pieces will be part of the landscape for hundreds of years. Beautifully filmed and edited, this is a real work of art in itself and will stand watching many times over. An inspiration for anyone who's ever felt the urge to go and make something.
