Olympus Zuiko Macro lenses
There was a competition between Japanese and German lens manufacture in the 70's on who makes the highest resolution lenses between the two technically advanced lens manufacturers. If my memory serves me right from the articles published by British Journal of Photography, the overall winner was Olympus Zuiko lenses over all other manufacturers including Schneider, Zeiss, Rodenstock, Canon and Nikon. Nikon have openly admitted that they prefer a high acutance over high resolution, the difference is in the edge contrast and give an overall appearance of 'sharpness' than the low contrast higher resolution which was preferred by the German lens makers. Then the rest is down to each of the manufacturers to portrait their perspective and ethos which offered as a characteristic that we user choose according to our 'taste'.
I'm certain the quality of lens affected hugely by quality control (or quality consistency) during manufacturing process and Olympus is one of the top lens maker that has this in place. I have owned many old and new Zuiko lenses and found the tolerance in batch variance from lens to lens is undetectable by us end users and only those who shoot test charts for a living can tell the slight difference.
I owned many different brand of cameras and many macro lenses and Olympus never fails to surprise me with the inherent contrast as well as resolution is always above other macro lenses from many other brands, sharpness is flat and run across the plane explained why these 'old' lenses still maintain and hold their resale value so well over the years.
For those who are new to macro photography that manual focus is the only option for few or none of the newer generation of macro lenses will work optimally with auto focusing as mostly will end up switching it to manual focus mode to stop the lens 'hunting' for the point of focus.
Anyone who never own an Olympus macro lenses should give it a try as these lenses are made with passion and totally over the board precision which few would disagree with me.
