King Kong Extended Edition
Not as celebrated as his Rings trilogy but definitely all Peter Jackson. At over three hours it never gets dull with it's beautifully rendered visuals, not just the creatures but 1920's New York too, and it's more than capable cast holding the viewers attention right to the very well known and often parodied end sequence high atop the Empire State Building. Under appreciated.

For once colorisation adds a dimension.
Along with Jonathan Lewis's ten part documentary 'The First World War' this engrossing series, narrated by Kenneth Branagh, remains the go-to source for an impartial and thorough examination of this catastrophic conflict. While Lewis's series has the edge in narration and detail this series benefits from the colorised footage and the participation of several surviving combatants including the awesome Harry Patch. You can get both series for about a fiver and you won't spend better money if history is your subject. Highly recommended.

Tarantino' second western.
I don't think I would be too biased to state that Quentin Tarantino has to be one of the best film makers of the modern era. This film, his eighth, may not have garnered the acclaim received by his previous work, Django Unchained, yet it would be wrong to assume that it isn't a great genre piece.
The plot is simple. A diverse group of stagecoach passengers are stranded together in a way station while sheltering from a storm. As time passes we learn about their backstories and motivations though it is clear from the start that one or more may not be telling the truth.
The film runs at well over three hours and the majority of that time is spent in the one location. For many film makers that would be an impossible premise to maintain. It's to Tarantino's credit that the time passes so quickly filled as it is with his usual smart dialogue, tightly drawn characters and of course, bursts of over the top violence.
The cast are all top notch and so is the score by the legendary Ennio Morricone. I won't go further into detail regarding who plays who and why they are stand out as I think you should just sit down and watch without knowing any of the details. Suffice to say that it's another instant classic from a director that seems to never put a foot wrong. Of his eight features only Death Proof would seem to be below his usual standard though even that film delivers on what it promises albeit more esoteric than his other works.
Highly entertaining, well cut and shot and definite VFM.
