The Historian
The Historian is more than another vampire book. Don't get me wrong. I love a good vampire book. However, there is more to this book than vampires. It is novel full of suspense without being what I would term a horror novel. It employs a variety of twists and turns while taking the reader to their ultimate destination. The characters are engaging and believable and they draw you into their orbit easily. The book mesmerizes you with a wonderful combination of flashbacks without making you feel like a yo-yo. At times, you may find yourself out of breath as you journey through history with the characters of the story. Therefore, if you enjoy a good page-turner full of suspense, check out The Historian. It is well worth the time.

Alexander the boy who had a bad day
As adults, we feel that children live lives that are charmed and without the emotional ups and downs we experience. However, Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good Very Bad, Day takes us through the day of one child who wakes up with gum in his hair and who realizes that everyone has bad days, even in Australia. Through Alexander's trying day, we journey through and as parents can be reminded of how traumatic the struggles of being a child can be. My kids have loved this book for the last 20 years. Kids can really relate to this child and can be drawn into the story even more if it is read to them aloud (use a child-like voice if at all possible). I've found it brings me closer to my kids and opens a dialogue that helps them open up about the challenges they face every day and helps them relate to the difficulties we as parents face as well. Go out and get Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day by Judith Viorst and you'll have the catalyst to many memorable conversations with your child no matter how old you or they are. After all, everyone has a bad day every now and then, even in Australia.

The Velveteen Rabbit: More than a children's tale.
The Velveteen Rabbit is a tender story of a stuffed rabbit. I suppose it could be called the Life and Times of the Velveteen Rabbit. However, the Velveteen Rabbit appears to be merely a child's tale, it is a commentary on life. It explains the how's and why's in some of life's deepest darkest secrets. Basically, through the wisdom of older and wiser toys, the stuffed rabbit begins to understand what it means to be loved. How love can sometime hurt and how sometimes that hurt is what lets you know that you've been loved. At the end of our lives we all will show the wear and tear of being loved and if we've loved well, we'll go on living in the hearts and minds of those whose lives we've touched and those we've been touched by.
