When an actor makes you despise his character, that is good acting.
The portrayal of Henry the Eighth by Jonathan Rhys Myers made me feel compassion for him, but also made me detest his arrogance and lust for power. The wife whom he hated most bore him one of the greatest rulers of England and of Europe: Elizabeth I.
The casting was excellent, and the portrayals were mostly accurate to the historical record. Very engaging and enjoyable.

Excellent Casting, Acting, and direction made for two riveting films, but historical flaws ruined the portrayals for me.
Cate Blanchett performs the role with such dedication and sensitivity, and with such passion, that I felt as if I were transported back in time to the intimate scenes at the court of Elizabeth I.
The directing and acting was superb in both of these films. There were some historical flaws, particularly the character or Robert Dudley. The gentleman remained a life long friend of Elizabeth, and he did nothing to dishonor his queen. While the plot requirements of drama may have required some fictionalization of his character to make the script more engaging, there were other historical sidelines that were left unexplored that might have provided the same. The films were flawed because there was no mention of either Francis Bacon or Edward de Vere, who were favorites at her court.
