This is an excellent film for baseball lovers or anyone who wants to see just a glimpse of "how we got from there to here". Though sanitized for general consumption, there is enough in the script to get a small taste of what Jackie Robinson had to endure so that others would be able to follow in his footsteps.
I find it humorous that Jackie and his wife had more education and breeding than the palookas on both sides of the lines who jeered them. I also liked that there was a range of reactions from the players and that some players showed growth and acceptance over the timeframe depicted (some never did).
The movie as a whole is very enjoyable, and kept me engaged from start to finish (though I am not a baseball fan). I would recommend 42 for all to watch. It provides a valuable lesson in dignity, diversity, and acceptance.

Johnny Depp once again tackles a quirky role. If even one half of this story is true, it explains much about why Hunter S. Thompson was so strange.
The film itself mirrors the main character's existence; wandering around in an alcohol induced fog, wanting to do the right thing, but perhaps just a bit too apathetic to get off of the couch.
In the final summation, were we entertained? Sure. Did we come away with any truth? NAAH. A good, but forgettable film.
