    Lomo LC-A 35mm Film Camera
    07 Jun, 2016
    Just what I was after
The LC-A is a joy to shoot. The simplicity of a fixed focal length and being effectively stuck in "P" mode, plus its small size – it will fit in a jeans pocket – make it a welcome change from my usual SLR photography. 35mm is the easiest film to find, and the easiest to process / have processed short of instant. The ISO/ASA setting dial is a bit limited – it runs in 1-stop clicks from 25 to 400 – but should be fine for most purposes. The light meter on mine (dated '86) seems to still work fine, though it errs on the side of overexposure in high-contrast situations. Obviously image quality is determined by the film as much as the camera, but the Minitar lens seems to compare well with others I've used: focussed areas are sharp and colour is vibrant. The hot shoe is X-sync (same as any modern flash system), and fires just before the shutter closes ("rear-curtain sync", in SLR terms). All in all, the LC-A is a nice compact camera for more casual film photography, and fits particularly well with Lomography-style shooting.
Ilford Multigrade set of 12 Filter Kit, 8.9cm x 8.9cm

    Perfect contrast control
Can be easily cut to fit the above-lens filter drawer of different enlargers. Works well with different brands of variable contrast paper. Gives consistent results.
    Lomography LCA instant back
    04 May, 2016
Does what it says it does
The instant back is a little fiddly to install, and you have to remember the small correction lens inside the Lomo LC-A, but once it's on it works just fine. Instax Mini film is pretty easy to find too. With a little extra work, it's easy to set up your LC-A to switch back and forth between 35mm film and the instant back, but once you've put one in you're stuck with it till the end of that container – either the 24/36exp roll of 35mm or the 10 shot pack of Instax. My instant back came without the viewfinder (as described), which makes framing photos a bit imprecise, but that suits the rules of Lomography anyway. The instant back hides the LC-A's normal viewfinder. Having the "film eject" button – completely separate to the shutter mechanism – makes it easy to take either regular or multiple exposure pictures. To make this work, the instant back has its own batteries (2 x CR2). Having to carry an extra set of spare batteries is a bit awkward but they're pretty small.
