THE FIRST AND BEST
of the Sondheim tributes was recorded live in 1973 during a 1-performance only benefit which took place at the Shubert in NYC on the set of the composer's then-current hit, "A Little Night Music". The subsequent cottage industry of Sondheim revues and tributes does nothing to dim this stellar cast and the freshness of the material. One only wishes the original label (Warner Brothers) had recorded the entire show on 3-LPs instead of the originally released two record set. The RCA re-release does include an extended overture in its entirety and the previously excised "Another Hundred People" sung by original "Company" cast member Pamela Myers who also appears on two other cuts. Other standouts are Nancy Walker doing one of the best renditions of "I'm Still Here" on record. Her trademark timing and knowing deadpan give this number a weight and insight that many subsequent performances have lacked. The finale features an array of Sondheim leading ladies brought onstage to the tune of "Beautiful Girls". Chita Rivera, who apparently had not yet graduated to Official Diva Status is inexplicably relegated to featured performer, recreating her "America" from "West Side Story" and bringing down the house in the process. Jack Cassidy and Susan Browning duet beautifully on the gorgeous ballad "So Many People" from the (at the time) unproduced "Saturday Night". Larry Blyden rips into "Buddy's Blues" (backed up by Rivera and Donna McKechnie) and Angela Lansbury (head cold and all) opens the second act with a fabulous recreation of "Me and My Town" and "Follies" original Ethel Shutta stops what remains of the show with the now-classic "Broadway Baby". As a majority of these performers are now gone, the value of this recording is increased two-fold. The excitement onstage and in the audience is palpable on this invaluable recording. If you can find it, get it!

Very HIGH SOCIETY
This is a great (and now) rare soundtrack of Cole Porter's last original-for-the-movies score. With Sinatra, Crosby, Satchmo, etc. what's not to like? And Grace Kelly (in her last film before going Monaco) actually had a chart-topping hit with Crosby:"True Love". And this is the show we have to thank (or curse) for insinuating into our culture the catch-phrase "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?" (here sung by Sinatra and Celeste Holm.) The sound of the Capitol issue CD is great to my ear at least, due in no small part to those fantastic MGM orchestrators circa 1956. I know there are some European bootlegs of this floating around and Rhino announced a reissue that has yet to appear but if you can find the Capitol, do.
