Genki is helpful and easy to learn from
Our teacher uses Genki and their text book has simple explanations, exercises, pictures, kanji review and practice, as well as footnotes to explain other uses of an expression or other forms it may appear as. The back of the book has some traditional stories to read, to practice kanji and reading. It's a very good book, and the only Japanese textbook that I've come across that actually acts as a textbook rather than a list of grammar rules. I highly recommend to anyone beginning Japanese.
