"You'll get your money, you'll get your money"
When I was a kid in the seventies, "Whatever Happened To The Likely Lads?" or WHTTLL as it became known for short, was just one of many great sitcoms that were the staple viewing during an evening in. Years later, BBC2 repeated it and I saw this wonderful thread running through it that I came to appreciate as a thirty-something adult. There's Bob, with his new house, new car, new friends, new wife, new lifestyle. There's Terry. Back from the army having missed the permissive era to find his environment changed beyond recognition. Neither are happy and desperately try to recreate their youth in an attempt to hang onto the past. Series two has some great episodes. "The Great Race" where they attempt a bicycle race to Berwick as they did when they were lads. "Affairs and Relations" where a fishing trip turns into nightmare. "Between Ourselves" when Terry moves in with the estranged Bob. Great to see all this now on DVD and although the blurb on the back asks for tolerance over quality, they all look as good as I have ever seen them. Now to get series one - "England F?, England flooded out".

Tarot cards, Tarot bananaman? Surely not?
Actually, the words go Tarot Guards, Tarot the diamond man but it does sound like Tarot cards, Tarot bananaman. This is an excellent early seventies series. Sadly the early episodes don't exist but check out the three P.J. Hammonmd written stories on these discs as you can see the origins of his Sapphire And Steel style. This is far superior to the patchy Tomorrow People series that replaced it. Watching it as an adult it never talks down to it's audience but does require compassion for it's budgetary failings. Great documentary and booklet but then they always are from Network. So sit down, put the disc in and wait for the lovely Thames banner followed by the beautiful theme and titles before you're whisked away to an Avengers style world of strange happenings.

The Barry Way
Top movie star gets involved in espionage shenanigans. Is this the life of Gene Bradley or Gene Barry? If you like your action seventies with dodgy flares, groovy sounds, back-projection, and big sunglasses, then this for you. I've always adored this series if only for the hilarity. All the episodes are presented here and there's an unusually good selection of extras including title sequences, unseen footage, interviews and a nice song with an Italian theme :) All professionally presented. Find out just what Gene Barry was like from his co-stars. If there's one reason alone for getting this, it's the groovy theme tune, or is it those handful of appearances made by Dennis Price?
