A tasty and well-made barrel.
A very good barrel for quick aging of spirits.
Carefully made of properly aged Quercus robor oak (I beleive) and toasted to a moderate level inside, it finished off 10l of white whisky in two months (I wouldn't suggest longer for the first use) adding vanilla, sweetness and a little smoke without the raw wood-shop sawdust taste of oak chips.
Stainless steel hoops, and carefully varnished (just the end-grain) to prevent leeching.
Rinse the barrel out and fill with hot water as described. My barrel came wrapped in cling-film to maintain humidity until use. It sat unused for a month in my shed before use (not recommended), but still sealled up leak-free in minutes.
The supplied wooden tap seals perfectly, and is preferred to brass (which may contain lead). The top bung weeps a bit when upside-down, just give it a good whack to seat it.
I expect this barrel to last for many more fillings, gradually needing longer aging times to extract the essences from the wood before being reconditioned or relegated to long-term aging or dispensing.
