I enjoy it!
Black and white viewing, not HD. And if this is important to you then you might choose a different performance. But I’ve watched many performances of this wonderful opera, both live and on video and this production has outshone all the rest that I’ve seen. Although I have not had a chance to see a performance conducted by the great Karl Boehm who is a master conducting Mozart operas.
This wonderful performance with the great Walter Berry, charming us as Papageno, and Roberta Peters as Queen of the Night, presents the opera in a way that it is understandable - keep in mind, the opera combines fantasy, social commentary of the time, a love story, a battle of the sexes, a declaration of the human condition and much more, while containing some of the most sublime music ever written. Other versions have left me with a sense of confusion about what’s going on. This Otto Schenk production is clearly presented with simple scenery changes, well designed costumes, helpful direction of staging, and clearly represented motivations of the characters.
I hope I will be able to find a video of a Karl Boehm performance from the 1960’s. Boehm is great a great conductor of Mozart operas, IMO.
