I felt like I was wandering around Venice...
As always, Donna Leon delivers a really wonderful portrait of a Venetian detective and his family, against the romantic/corrupt/charming background of Venice. She captures the amazing feeling of wandering around the calli of Venice, and makes her protagonist, Brunetti, a really likeable, imperfect hero. And her descriptions of Paola's meals always make me hungry. If you have never visited Venice, this is a great introduction.

Slaves in the Family Hardcover Edward Ball

Extraordinary history of enslavement in America
Edward Ball writes an excellent history of the enslaved his family bought, sold and owned for over 100 years. He interviewed hundreds of people, Black and white, and fills the narrative with anecdotes . I highly recommend this book to any American who is willing to look at not only the greatness of our country, but at our flaws.
