    10MM OD X 7MM ID (1.5MM WALL) 316 SEAMLESS STAINLESS STEEL TUBE X 500MM

    A useful boaty rescue.
The rudder on my boat was broken. No surprise really, as the narrow bit was cross-grain. Anyway, I carefully scarfed in a new piece with the grain in a much stronger orientation. Whilst the glue set, I had arranged to fix it with some long decking-type screws, with the intention of removing them and replacing them later as they weren’t stainless steel. All went well until removing the last one: the longest at 26cm - which snapped off near the head. I didn’t want to leave it in as it would eventually rust and split the wood, so, what to do? Aha! I had a cunning plan! I bought some 10mm stainless, seamless tube with a wall thickness of 1.5mm, cut it to make 3 progressively long drills, then ground teeth to go in an anti-clockwise direction in the ends, first with an angle grinder then with a Dremel. It took a lot of doing: extracting the bits periodically and cooling them as they heated up - they also needed a bit of hammering as they’d tend to go a bit bell-ended with the heat and pressure, plus re-sharpening a few times, but it eventually got down in there and the last bit of the screw unscrewed itself. The plan now is to pour resin into the resultant hole and epoxy one of these, now redundant, hollow drills into it, let it set, cap it off with more wood, and Robert’s-your-father’s-brother.

I've found it best to go for proper Bosch batteries as I've had disappointments with copies.

A PROPHETIC GLIMPSE OF OUR OWN FUTURE?
I’ve watched this whole series through twice - and I’d happily watch it all again. An excellent story, well worth a watch; well conceived, well acted and well told, and with good action and some credible SFX. What’s more it’s very relevant to our times. So called condemned “terrorists”, seeking to bring back democracy, are flashed back to our present day from a future plutocracy controlled by the big corporations: the “Corporate Congress”, where only the very rich, their friends, servants and sycophants have any sort of life; everyone else is on the scrapheap of life or conscripted into slavery, scrabbling to survive on the fringes, with no policing, health services or security. In the not-too-distant future, peaceful protests and petitions have become more and more ignored by authorities and real democracy has been sold out - leading to more violent actions. So, when this condemned group gets whizzed back to present day, a corporate cop gets accidentally whizzed back with them - and chaos reigns. In our present reality, when self-serving leaders, like Trump, May and Johnson, are selling out the people’s future to greedy corporations - here’s that future coming back to today to tell us how hideous it could become - if we don’t do something now. And at least it has a proper ending: it didn’t get cancelled like so many have, that leave you dangling on a frustrating cliffhanger. It is, of course, only a story - but it’s uncomfortably close to the road we’re heading down right now. Perhaps we ought to take it as a warning and fight to re-set our future on the right path right now. No one’s coming back from the future to save us…
