Fantastic speakers and worth far more than they normally sell for!
I bought these as I owned a pair of MS20i pearls, but wanted something a little warmer sounding, as my listening room is a glass conservatory which emphasises treble. The MS812 was made right at the end of the original company's tenure - after the MS8xx models Mordaunt Short got bought up by Audio Partnership, the same guys that own Cambridge Audio and are closely linked with Richer Sounds. The MS sound changed markedly after this time - they still get good reviews, but for my money the pre-AP days were the best. I've struck gold with these little gems. They are extremely musical sounding with voices and instruments actually sounding like voices and instruments (an odd thing to say, but you would be amazed how many speakers don't achieve this). They also have a nice warm bass balance, but one that isn't flabby or ill defined - you can clearly hear the notes that the bass player is playing rather than just a bassy mush. Sturdy speaker stands are a must as they really help the definition of the sound, and the MS812s are easily capable of revealing differences between sources and amplification - I run mine with a Mac Mini / Technics SL1210 with Denon cartridge and Mission Cyrus 2 amplifier and they really sing. They are quite rare, and for me a step up from the already brilliant MS20i Pearl Edition that I used previously. If you can find a pair in excellent condition, snap them up!
Tannoy Revolution R3 Main / Stereo Speakers

    Fantastic loudspeakers
With today's hifi loudspeakers commanding ever higher prices, there seems to be a lot of interest in older "classic" speakers. The Revolution R3s are a great example. Unlike some of the older 80s speakers such as the Mordaunt Short MS55tis (themselves great-sounding speakers), these are designed a lot more in line with today's market - taller, slimmer with a real wood finish. The MS speakers look a bit clumsy and boxy by comparison. The R3's sound fantastic, with an incredibly deep bass for their size. If used close to a wall, they do need the foam plugs in the rear ports to stop any bass boom - if these are missing, cut-to-size bathroom sponges seem to work! The vocals are as clear and lifelike as anything I've heard this side of £1k, and with a decent amplifier (I use a Cyrus 2) have the ability to make instruments appear in the room. There is also a tangible soundstage, with picking out vocalists particularly easy. They are also able to move a lot of air, with the result that dynamic passages and crecendos have all the power they need, whilst quieter passages are afforded the subtlety they require. Acoustic singer/songwriter material comes across particularly well, as does jazz. Bi-wiring is possible, but having tried with a borrowed pair of cables, I couldn't see any huge benefit over a single run of decent cable (I use fisual pearl 2.5mm OFC copper cable, which is cheap but highly effective). Overall, a great pair of speakers that allows the listener to enjoy the performance.

Audio Technica AT-VM95C Dual Moving Magnet Cartridge

Fantastic value for money, great sound.
Simple to align, and sounds way better than a £30 cartridge has any right to. A fantastic match for my Linn LVX arm, and more timbral details than the old AT91 which itself is a great cart. Highly recommended.
